Prep Instructions

Night Before:

Shower and exfoliate the night before your spray (12-18 hours before - do not shave the day of your spray tan!) to give your skin some time to regain its natural moisture balance.

If you must shave with a razor that has a moisture trip or shaving cream/gel, it’s best that you wash your legs after to help remove the residue. Waxing gives the best results 48+ hours before your tan.

Many body washes, shower gels, bar soaps, shampoos, and conditioners can leave a residue on your skin - please wash hair, condition, and shave, then wash all over with a body wash approved for spray tanning or exfoliating scrub made for spray tanning to ensure all of the residue is removed from the skin before your spray tan! Many salt and sugar scrubs contain oils that will block your tan from penetrating through the skin properly and not developing.

Unlike UV rays, which tan all four layers of your skin, spray tanning only tans the first layer — this is why proper care for your spray tan is so important. You have to deeply exfoliate (especially if your skin is on the dryer side) to rid any dead skin cells so only the new cells get tanned (dead skin cells will flake off and result in blotchy fading).

I sell an exfoliating scrub ($5 — also available as 1 of 5 items in the trial kit — $30) that is spray tan friendly. I also highly recommend the Dermisuri exfoliating mitt for $25 for the best results — this mitt will last you about six months and has won a beauty award in 2024 from Cosmo magazine!

Before your appointment:

After the last shower before your appointment, do not apply any lotion, perfume, oils, or makeup to your skin. You can apply some light deodorant — just keep in mind that this area may develop a little lighter.

I do have one approved product that can be applied after your shower/before your spray tan. I highly recommend using this if you battle with dry skin as dry skin can also have a negative effect on your spray tan’s outcome. Contact me if dry skin is an issue for you and we will discuss some options.

Your skin should be free of lotion, perfume, oils, natural oils produced by your body, makeup, and sweat when arriving for your tan. Please do not attempt to remove these products with baby wipes, makeup wipes, etc. as they may also contain ingredients that are not spray tan friendly. I have products available that will not affect your tan’s development.

While developing:

Cold weather — Wear loose-fitting clothing and shoes that will not rub when walking, sitting, etc.

Hot weather — Sweats and UGG type boots are suggested

Warm weather — Maxi dress, shorts, loose tee shirt, flip flops (if it is hot out and you are wearing shorts, bring a towel for your legs in the car so that you do not sweat in the car)

Wet weather — Protect your tan from moisture! If it’s raining, cover up sufficiently, wear rain boots, large covering jacket, and umbrella! We will always help you get from the studio to your car on rainy days to help protect your tan!

Do not sweat, cry, apply liquid/cream makeup, or get liquid on your skin for 12 hours after your tan application.

We do offer accelerated tans that can be washed off anywhere from 30 minutes - 5 hours after application. If you have this type of tan, it is very important to rinse off at the exact time you are instructed for proper development. After rinsing, you can get wet without disrupting your tan’s development. However, you will still want to keep your skin free of any oils, lotions, makeup, and sweat for the next 12 hours to ensure proper development.

If you were unable to follow these instructions for any reason, please note that this may affect the life of your tan as well as the tan’s ability to absorb into the skin properly, affecting development.

Message me on Facebook and I will send you the demonstration video of the Dermisuri mitt.

If you are going to book a mani or pedi, check with me about when you should book as it is possible it could affect your tan.

Recommendations:

It is recommended that you check with your physician if you are pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition. Many of our clients are pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition, but it’s always safer to check first!

If you have any allergies, please let us know, as we keep our solutions as vegan and naturally based as possible. This means some of our ingredients may contain walnut extract, elderberry, aloe, etc.

We recommend a swatch test 24 hours prior to your first tan with a different solution to check for a DHA allergy or other allergies that you may not even be aware of having. It’s very rare that someone does have an allergic reaction to the solution, but it’s best to know before spraying you head to toe! If you feel like you need to arrange a swatch test for allergies (this does not predict color) for $15, contact me via text at (740) 981-6419 and we will arrange a time/date.
